Sanatın halkın parasıyla desteklenmesi prensibi, şimdilerde hükümetimiz tarafından ‘örnek almaya zorlandığımız’ İngiltere’de bile hala kıyasıya tartışılan bir konu. İngiliz The Arts Council Başkanı Sir Peter Bazalgette’nin 2013 yılı Eylül ayında The Telegraph gazetesindeki ‘sanata devlet desteği’ni savunan makalesine verilen okur cevaplarından üçü, bu ülkede sayıca hiç de azımsanmayacak olan ‘destek karşıtı’ kitlenin duygularına tercüman olmuş:

Of course we can afford NOT to support the arts. Shakespeare wasn’t paid by the government to write plays. If the “art” is any good, the public will pay to see it, read it, or listen to it. The idea of art charities is inherently ridiculous; but it’s a handy subsidy, paid for by the many, for “artists” who hope to foist their work on a gullible few.
